Workshops
I facilitate interactive workshops for groups of all sizes, including faculty at every career stage, academic leaders, graduate students, and professional staff. Sessions can bring together broad audiences from across disciplines and career stages, or they can be tailored to the unique needs of specific groups, such as early-career faculty, department chairs, or leadership teams.
Facilitating interactive workshops is one of my favorite things to do. I especially appreciate how participants strengthen skills and build connections simultaneously in these sessions. And I’m struck by how often people are surprised—not only by the deeper nature of the work we do together, but by what they discover about themselves, their context, and the possibilities available to them.
Workshop Descriptions
-
Life in academia seems to get harder every year. The intense and varied demands lead to constant juggling, which can leave us feeling that we’re not doing anything well. Unhelpful stories like this further escalate our stress, setting off a vicious cycle. The good news is that shifting our self-talk can have a big positive impact on our experience, reducing our stress and improving our quality of life. We’ll walk through a 3-step process for harnessing our self-talk as an internal source of support.
-
After taking time to envision our ideal professional future, we identify key behaviors that will support that and explore ways of strengthening the necessary skills.
-
In this workshop, we consider how stress and overwhelm show up in the body, discuss the dimensions and root causes of burnout, and explore ways to recover and build resilience for the future.
-
Life in academia can be extremely demanding. When the challenges repeatedly exceed our ability to cope, we may suffer overwhelm and even trauma. In this workshop, we outline some of the experiences that can lead to trauma, discuss the profound impact these experiences have on our well-being and performance, and most important, offer practical strategies for fostering healing.
-
In this somewhat atypical approach to goal-setting, we focus first on how we want to feel at the end of the planning horizon and use that to inform our choices and priorities.
-
What comes to mind when you hear the word “networking”? Perhaps you envision a cocktail party in a room brimming with small talk. Or maybe you think about sharing your work with an unfamiliar colleague at an institution across the globe in hopes of getting personalized feedback. Whatever you imagine, you may struggle to establish strong professional connections in ways that feel easy and authentic. In this workshop, we explore the many potential benefits of networking and identify clear next steps that fit each participant’s unique circumstances and style.
