in honor of the first day of school...

Both of my kids started school today (one a senior in high school and the other a junior in college), so in honor, I'm posting two poems on the back-to-school theme.  I think that they form bookends of sorts.  The first is not a haiku, but a tanka, a similar Japanese form with 5 lines of 5-7-5-7-7 syllables.  I hope you enjoy them.  :)

off to school: a tanka

Little bags of cheese,

Shredded of course, with Goldfish,

And salami, sliced.

Three-year-old hands grip a Toy

Story lunch box. So grown up.

off to college: a haiku

Even his bed?  Gone?

Tricky thing, this letting go.

Shattering success.
